Cogent Invest in New SMA Capacity

Following 3 consecutive years of growth Cogent Technology has invested in a new high speed, highly flexible SMA line centred around a pair of machines from MYDATA.

"We needed more placement capacity and our customer's products were developing in such a way that we need the ability to place a variety of odd forms" says Nigel Slator, Managing Director.

Nigel goes on to say "This is the cornerstone of our business planning and has been activated at the right time to meet our aspirations for the next 3 years."

The sales team are very excited about what they can now promise to customers in terms of technology and capacity.

Despite a proportion of Cogent's growth being based upon its managed offshore services the company is keen to demonstrate that it takes the ongoing development of its UK manufacturing operation very seriously. "There are markets we have identified which need the attentiveness of a UK facility, particularly those which demand the most advanced placement technologies and manufacturing expertise" says Robert Stainer, Sales Director.

Cogent's typical UK customer requires rapid new product introductions and constant evolution thereafter.

"We did extensive trials with the machines on offer and the blend of placement speed and machine changeover time we achieved on the MYDATA machines was streets ahead of the alternatives" say Michael Charlesworth, Process Engineering Manager.

Cogent considers with software tools which accompany the line as hugely powerful, simplifying offline programming and allowing line optimisation to determine not only the best configuration for loading parts to the machine but the best order in which to run a sequence of jobs.

"The programming tool predicts run times and so far it has been matching that prediction in real time, it has made week by week planning so much more realistic", enthused Duncan Shimmon, SMA Team Leader.
